(How You can Help End World Hunger)

• Every 3.6 seconds someone dies of hunger. 75% of them are children.
• There is enough food to feed every person on earth, yet 17% of us are currently malnourished or starving.
• The problem affects people of every race and on every continent.
• 1,386 people died from Hurricane Katrina, yet 24,000 people die EACH DAY from starvation or malnutrition.
• Even in the richest country in the world, The United States, over 10 million people suffer from hunger.
• More people around the world are dying of starvation than any other time in history.
• Malnutrition, as measured by stunting of growth, affects 32.5 percent of children in developing countries

Causes

There is by far enough money and resources on earth to satisfy the basic needs of every human being. The question is, as a society, what are we spending our money on? Much too much of society's resources go to things like the production of oversized cars and houses, clothes we don't wear, food we don't eat or that makes us fat, and gadgets we don't really need and many times don't even use. The most basic cause of hunger is the misallocation of resources not the lack of resources themselves.

In fact the poorest countries in the world EXPORT much of their food to rich nations and yet leave their own citizens starving. Some of this can be attributed to the corrupt, greedy, and selfish leaders of these nations. But to place the sole blame on them is to ignore our own shortcomings.

Solutions

The problem is complex and so the solutions must also be complex and wide ranging:

• Food and water distribution - Collecting and delivering food and clean water to people who are starving and malnourished is an immediate step that needs to be taken. However our efforts can't end there as long term aid from outside sources is not a real solution.
• Education - Education means not only teaching people how to farm and collect clean water but also in teaching people fundamental skills which they can offer to the rest of the world so they can earn their share of the food supply.
• Economic Development - Poverty and hunger go hand in hand, and the least economically developed countries usually have the highest rates of starvation. Economic development allows people to unlock their own potential as well as the potential of theier community and nation.
• Technology - Clean water technology and other technologies should be made freely available because in the long run providing free technology is much less costly than dealing with the consequences of ill health.

In order to feel more comfortable with donating your time and money it may be necessary to change your mindset to one of appreciation, abundance, and happiness. Once you see the world from a perspective of "I have enough" as opposed to "I need more" this will allow you to feel more comfortable with giving what you now feel you have too much of:

Most of the planet's problems are inter-related and so are the solutions. The fear of not having enough, and the constant competition to outdo each other which has spread to the rich nations of the world leads to vast over-consumption of resources. This leads to resource wars both in a physical and economic sense. One of the hidden casualties of that war is over 1 billion people on earth who today either don't have enough food to eat or don't have access to clean drinking water.

To allow this to continue is a crime against humanity.
