How to Change The World

So, what is Dreamer.Me?

The modern economies of the world are systems which responds to the will of the people. If people begin to consider where their dollars end up before making a purchase or using a service (like Dreamer.Me) companies will have to respond by using their profits to make the world a better place for all of us.

It is this idea, and your participation in it, that will change the world.

We are an internet search engine:
  1. You search and shop on our website.
  2. We make money from your searches and shopping.
  3. We invest 100% of our profits (= revenue - expenses) in various causes and charities in order to improve the world we all share.
  4. Together we change the world.

It's against the law for corporations to donate too much money.

If you want to how to change the world, first you have to understand why it is the way it is. Within the rules of modern society it's against the law for a publicly traded corporation to put community service and philanthropy ahead corporate profits. This means that all publicly traded corporations (such as Google, Coca-Cola, DirecTV, Bank of America etc...) must at all times seek to maximize profit and may only give to charity if by giving this will cause increased profits!

So, in answer to the question, why do these massive corporations spend all their time and effort trying to make more and more money, at the expense of so many other more worthy endeavors? Because legally, they have to do so!

Below is perhaps the most famous case of this:
By 1916 Henry Ford was a rich man: his company was making $60,000,000 of profit a year (in 1916 dollars!) and he was the dominant shareholder. Rich beyond belief, he made a shocking announcement to Ford's shareholders - rather than paying out the profit in the form of dividends, he wanted to invest it back in the company to "employ still more men; to spread the benefits of this industrial system to the greatest possible number, to help them build up their lives and their homes."
In other words Ford wanted to spend his profits to make the world a better place, not to make more money for himself. What happened?
Minority shareholders were enraged by Ford and sued - alleging that a corporation could not put philanthropy ahead of the interests of the shareholders. The court agreed.
So basically, Ford was sued for attempting to use his money to improve the world - he lost - and was forced to abandon his ideas. Since then, a modern corporation would never even think of putting philanthropy ahead of profits.

Legally, a publicly traded corporation can only give to charity if it makes money for the corporation. This explains why Google has a $10 million "social change" initiative, yet spent $1.65 billion purchasing YouTube and $3.1 billion purchasing DoubleClick.

Our World

Top Down Investment

Modern corporations are quite good at improving the world from the top down. For example:
  • A company like Coca-Cola might use it's profits to build a better coke dispenser.
  • A company like Google might use its profits to create better targed ads.
  • A company like DirecTV might use its profits add more tv channels.
But let's be honest with ourselves, does the world really need a better soda dispenser, better targeted ads, and more tv channels? Would ANY of these improvements really change the world in a meaningful way? Would any of these changes save our environment, reform our educational systems, or end world hunger? Many top down improvements focus on changes where they're needed least.

Bottom Up Investment

What would the world be like if corporations could use their profits
to change the world from the bottom up?

Bottom up improvements focus on changes where their needed most:
  • Instead of building better coke dispensers we're building better schools. An improved school system, will lead to a more educated population, which means more engineers and less gang members, which means a better world for everyone.
  • Instead of creating better targeted ads we're cleaning up the environment. Our corporate system has spent hundreds of years destroying the foundation of very world we live in, our environment. Current environmental efforts are only mildly slowing the damage. A clean environment means a healthy planet for generations to come.
  • Instead of adding more tv channels we're investing in world changing technologies. Imagine what the world would be like with a truly advanced mass transportation system. Imagine what the world would be like once a few space elevators are completed.

Dreamer.Me is non-profit that actually makes a profit. We prefer to call ourselves a Public Benefit Corporation and we're changing the world by redefining both the corporation and the non-profit.

When was the last time you heard of a corporation doing good with their profits?

When was the last time you heard of a non-profit actually making money?

The Good Life Foundation (which owns Dreamer.Me) is not a publicly traded corporation, so we can choose to use our profits in whatever manner we see fit as long as it is in line with our mission. This is why we can use 100% of our profits to make the world we all share a better place. And you, our users, get to choose where you think the money would be best spent.

Dreamer.Me isn't just a search engine. It's a paradigm shift; it's a new way of seeing the world, a new way of doing things. When you use us to search the internet you're saying to the world:
"Corporations may not have a choice, but I have a choice. Today I decide that I would rather have the money I generate spent on things that really make a difference - things like better medical care, a more educated population, a world without hunger, world changing technological advances, and finally a dream of a clean and healthy planet that we all share!"
